New Web Site launched in Memory of St Paul's school

A new web site to the Memory of St Paul's school has been launched this week. The web site has been sponsored by ex Brierley girl Linda Hand (nee Spaxman) and her husband Phil who are the proprietors of Amazon Rainwater supplies that are based in Hemsworth. The site will be run by the Gary Hotchins who also runs this Brierley Village web site and will include photographs, memories, memorabilia and starts of with an article by Alan Balmforth who's dad was Jack Balmforth the headmaster there from 1944 to 1968. The web site will also be dedicated to him and his teaching staff. www.stpaulsschoolbrierley.com

 

Father Christmas

Children of Brierley will be able to visit Father Christmas in his Grotto at the post office on Saturday 13 December between 10am and twelve noon and receive a small gift from Debbie and a free photograph taken with Santa courtesy of Brierley and its people in photographs. A £1 voluntary donation to charity would be kindly accepted and which will be presented to Terry Haynes from the Grimethorpe Ambulance Association towards their Christmas party for disadvantaged people from Brierley and Grimethorpe.

 

Spiritualist Church

On Friday's at 6pm there is  Healing in the Sanctuary followed at 7pm with an open circle. This Sunday's service of mediumship at 6pm will be taken by Adrian Clarke from Wakefield. Refreshments will be served after each service. Peter Politano from Barnsley will hold the service on the last Sunday in November. There will be a Christmas buffet and demonstration of mediumship with Julie Winfield on Wednesday 3 December at 7pm. Tickets are £4 and are available from the church.

 

Aladdin

Pyramid Productions will be coming to the Lifestyle community centre on 14 December with their production of the pantomime Aladdin. Tickets for children under 16 are now on sale at £3 each, while 16 year olds and over may purchase tickets at the educed price of £1.

 

Pop In

The next Pop in morning at the Methodist church hall will take place on Thursday 4 December from 9.15am till 11.15. Everyone is invited to pop in for tea, coffee, biscuits and a chat. Proceeds are towards church funds.

 

Christmas Lights

The Christmas lights in Brierley will be switched on around or on the 10 December.

 

Three Horse Shoes

There is a quiz night at the Three Horse Shoes on a Thursday at 9.30pm and on Sunday at 8pm there is a music, conundrum and general knowledge quiz.

 

Methodist Church

The service this Sunday morning at 10.15 will be a local arrangement. The welcoming steward will be Edwin. There will be a Sacrament service at 6pm which will be taken by the Rev B Russell. There will also be a collection for the Benevolent Fund. Hilda will provide this weeks flowers. There was a jewellery evening at the home of Edwin and Elizabeth on Friday at 7.30pm. Proceeds will be for church funds. The majorettes will meet on Thursday.

 

Baipip

This is the last weekend to order the limited edition of 2009 calendars depicting old Brierley scenes available from the post office and designed by Baipip. Any profits go towards collecting and archiving old photographs and the cine film project.

 

Grange House

There will be a coffee morning to include a clothing and gift party on Tuesday starting at 10.30am till 12 noon. There will also be a free glass of sherry and a mince pie. Proceeds will be for the resident’s social fund and everyone is invited. On Tuesday 9 December, residents will hold their Christmas party when the Grimethorpe and District Junior Brass Band will play. The event will start at 5pm till 9pm and all residents will receive a present from Father Christmas.

 

Village club

There is a quiz night every Monday starting at 9pm. The winner last week was Volvo Phil. The first round draw for the Graham’s Taxi Christmas pool knockout trophy has been made and the matches which will be the best of three frames are as follows: Becky Williams vs Tracy Molics, Davina McLoud vs Sheila Beasley, Malcolm Millburn vs Keith Brown, Alan Davies vs Stephen Whaling, John Beasley vs Kenneff Clarke, John Clarke vs Bernard Lucas jnr, Andy Darbyshire vs Colin Pease, Paul Round vs Phil Brown, Graham Hotchins vs Mark Woolands, Dave Roystone vs Dale Woolands, Neil Bower vs Bernard Lucas snr, Andy Westwood vs Leanne Lawton, Adrian Kenneth Shard vs John Makinson, Chas Oldham vs Dale Creasey and Darren Kearford vs Adam Taylor. All the other players receive byes.

 

Labour Party

The next meeting of the Brierley Ward Labour party will take place in Brierley Village club on Sunday 30 November at 10.30am.

 

Town Council

The next meeting of Brierley Town council is on Tuesday at 7pm at Brierley Methodist church. Father Christmas will be visiting the streets of Grimethorpe and Brierley on December 20 and 21.

 

Brierley Cubs FC

In the Sunday Millennium league, the under 11s played at home to Mexborough Rovers and won 3-1. Scorers for Brierley were Ryan Smith, Tyler Leese and Corey Wyatt who was also the manager’s man of the match. Next week they will play away to Mexborough Rangers kick of time to be arranged.

 

Boys Brigade

Both the Junior Boys and Company Section meetings take place on Wednesday night in the Methodist Church Hall. The 7 to 11 year olds meeting will take place from 6.30pm till 8pm and the older boys will meet from 7pm till 9. Edwin and Elizabeth Hambleton lead the boys.

 

Women’s Fellowship

The Fellowship meeting takes place on a Monday at 2pm at the Methodist Church. Last week the ladies enjoyed readings.

 

Bric a Brac

The Bric a Brac sale that was held in the Three Horse Shoes car park last week raised £35 for Children in Need.
