Coppins Easter Fayre

At the Coppins Easter Fayre on Sunday a total of £153 was raised towards the residents outing fund. One of the residents Mr Eric Dodsley made a private donation of £5. Winners of the raffle prizes were, Ena Barraclough, large Easter egg. Teddy Bear, Hazel Kemp who also won an Easter egg kit. Bottle of whisky, Dr Amos. Photo frame, Jack. Polar Bear, Barbara Miller. Fitted sheets, Christine Hanwell. Jar of toffees, Denise Edwards. Wine and chocolates, Darren. Buttons egg, Jenny Ward. Tin of biscuits, June Harris. Tin of toffees Nathan Cross and a bottle of sherry was won by Andy Roberts. The bonus ball winner on Wednesday was Ena Barraclough with winning number 26 while Rene Halliday won on Saturday with number 11.

Methodist Church

Mr. M. Sanderson will take the Sunday morning family service at 10.15am while The Rev Leslie Newton will take the evening service at 6pm. On Tuesday there will be a ladies recreation evening at 7.30pm.

 

St. Paul's Church

The Rev John Baskerville will take this Sunday's Eucharist service at 9am. Beverly Kenworthy will be the reader.

Brierley Labour Party; Meet the last Sunday in every month in Brierley Social club at 10am.

Football

Brierley Cubs under 9s played three friendly games away to Fitzwilliam recently. Two seven a-side games where played and Brierley won both matches 5-0 and 1-0. The two seven a side teams then combined to play an eleven a side game and won 3-0. The team will play in friendlies away to Hemsworth this Sunday. Players are asked to meet at the park for 9.45am. Brierley also have an under 14s team who play under the named of Brierley Tigers. Both teams normally meet in the welfare park on Sunday morning's for training but this will suspended for two weeks due to the friendly matches. Both teams have been entered in the Fitzwilliam league that starts on May 8. David Henstock coaches the teams.

 

Easter Bonnet Parade

There will be an Easter Bonnet Parade in the Three Horse Shoes on Easter Monday night. Judging will take place at 9pm. The event has been organised by the Special Events group under the leadership of Doreen Henstock.

 

Post Office

The post office will close for the Easter holidays on Thursday 28 March at 5pm and will reopen on Tuesday April 2 at 9am.

 

Break in

Considerable damage was done to the premises of the Methodist Church on Monday night when thieves entered by a side door. No items were taken but a microwave and vacuum cleaner were left on the car park. A nearby farm was also broken into on the same night.

 

THS Quiz

There will be a general knowledge quiz night in the Three Horse Shoes on Thursday at 8.30pm. The winner last Thursday night's quiz was Judith Kenyon-Hill with 16 out of 20.
Eric Pickering won the takings (income from quiz sheet sales) for guessing within three runs, the total runs scored in the 1st test match (1294).

 

St. Paul's Church

Beverly Kenworthy will read the lesson at this Sunday's Eucharist service at 9am The service will be led by the Rev John Baskerville.

 

Concert

A concert in aid of the Brierley Methodist Church new building fund will be hosted by Cudworth Methodist Church on Wednesday April 6 at 7.30pm. The New Mill Male Voice Choir will provide the entertainment and the tickets priced at £5 can be obtained by telephoning Mr Edwin Hambleton on 01226 713654.

Donations

Friends and family of the late Mrs Rose Mary Wright have donated £250 in her memory to the Take Heart Club at the Leeds General Infirmary.

 

Stephen Lawton

The death occurred recently of a former well known Brierley resident Stephen Lawton aged 42, who died in the Prince of Wales Hospice at Pontefract after a short illness. Stephen was brought up on the Hillside estate and moved to Castleford with his wife Margaret. He worked most of his life as a tyre fitter and a taxi driver and both he and his wife Margaret were keen Castleford Tigers rugby league fans. Stephen was visited by two of the players in the hospice shortly before his death. He leaves a widow and two children Kerry age eight and Hannah age three.

 

Women's Fellowship

Mrs C Bryant was the guest speaker at this week's Woman's Fellowship meeting which will be held in the Methodist Church on Wednesday at 2pm. Mrs Margaret Watson was pianist. A ladies recreation evening is held on Tuesday night at 6pm.

 

Grange House

The winner of the raffle prize at the Monday night social evening was Norah Harrison while Jean Ennis won on Thursday. Friday's winner was Rita Sayers. Residents enjoyed a pie and pea supper on Tuesday with John Wallace from Cudworth providing the entertainment on the piano.

 

Garden & Allotment Society

There are currently two allotments available to rent off Barnsley Road. If anyone is interested they should contact the secretary Pat Nicholls on 01226 710888. They will be allotted on a first come first served basis

 

Women’s Fellowship

The Reverend Gill Newton was guest speaker at the Women's fellowship on Wednesday. Margaret Watson was pianist

 

Special Events group

The ladies from the Special Events group of the Brierley Village (Community) Partnership recently held a disco and Easter Bonnet competion for the kids in the village. The event was held in Brierley School. The winner of the girls under 7 prize was Megan Cartwright. The under 5s winner was Loran Pearson and Amy Hambleton was second. The boy's winner was Jack Bullivant Leighton and second was Alex Westman. All the Prize-winners received an Easter egg while Mr Reid presented all the rest of the pupils with a small gift.

 

Clairvoyance special

A Clairvoyant special evening with Joyce Divine will be held at the Spiritualist Church on Wed March 17 at 7pm. Tickets priced at £1.50 are available from the church.

 

Table Top Sale

All the tables for the tabletop sale at the Methodist Church on Saturday April 18 are booked. If anyone is interested in leaving there name for a reserve table telephone Margaret Watson on 01226 712094. The event will take place between 10am and 1pm.

 

Spiritualist Church

There will be healing in the sanctuary by trained volunteers on Friday night at 6pm till 6.45 followed by an open circle at 7pm. Sunday is a service of hymns, prayers and clairvoyance and will be taken this week by Veronica Shears from Leeds. at 7pm. To ease traffic congestion on Church Street visitors are asked to use the Brierley Hall car park. Next Sunday's service on the 24th March will be taken by Rae Hurley from Leeds
