Man found with throat slashed named

 The 59 –years-old man from the Grange Road estate who was found outside his back door with his throat cut last week has been named as Frederick Jow. The man was dead when the emergency services arrived. Police believe there are no suspicious circumstances at this stage.

 

 

Frontsl/de on the way

The young Brierley punk rock band will cut their first CD ‘Still Waiting’ at the Beaumont Street studios during the weekend 24 and 25 of August. They will also appear in a gig at the Methodist Church celebration week on Tuesday 27 August. For further details on the gig telephone Richard Baxendale on 01226 711226

Regular events and meetings:

Brierley Historic Photographic Society

Meets on Monday and Wednesday 10am till 12 and Thursday night 7pm till 9pm when Jean Mann will be available to answer any Genealogy questions.

 

Garden and Allotment Society;

Meet the first Wednesday in every month in the Three Horse Shoes at 9pm.

 

Brierley Labour Party

Meet the last Sunday in every month in Brierley Social club at 10am.

 

Brierley Village (Community) Partnership;

Meet every second Tuesday in the month in their offices at Brierley Hall at 7pm.

 

Methodist Church

The Brierley House Group will take the Sunday morning family service at 10.15am and the evening service at 6pm will be taken by Miss E Haigh.

 

Coffee Morning

A coffee morning will be held at the Tara offices on Hillside on Tuesday morning from 10 while 12. Bingo and raffle will also be played.  Last weeks raffle winner was Hazel Devonport.

 

Action Team for Jobs                                                  

The Action Team for Jobs will be available on Wednesday morning in the History Society rooms at the rear of Brierley Hall from10 till 12.15pm

 

Doncaster Dome

Paid up members from the Hillside Tara will enjoy a day at Doncaster Dome on Friday July 23. The coach will leave the estate at 1pm and return at 4pm. The trip is now fully booked

 

Social Club.

The Sunday night tote for £100 is still unclaimed. The winner of the mixed grill on Friday was Mark Whittle. The artiste tonight Friday, will be Al Peters while Lee Alexandra will provide the entertainment on Sunday. The winner of the gallon of beer draw was Mally. The bonus ball winners were Albert Taylor on Saturday and Vernon Simpson on Wednesday. Bingo is played on Tuesday and Thursday while Monday is games night.

 

St Paul’s Church

There will be Morning Prayer worship this Sunday at 9am, which will be taken by Judith Bradford. Barbara Pearson will read the lesson.

 

Grange House

Rita Sayers won Monday nights raffle at the Grange House social evening. Jean Crowshaw won on Thursday.

 

Thomas Niven

The death occurred recently of former Grimethorpe and Brierley resident, Thomas Niven aged 45. Tommy as his friends knew him was a well-known local footballer for many years playing for all neighbouring villages of Grimethorpe, Brierley and Shafton. He moved to Grimethorpe at the age of 18 from Glasgow. After serving a number of years in the Royal Navy, he worked at Redfearns Glassworks and then Grimethorpe colliery until its closure. He then spent a number of years travelling up and down the country seeking work until last year when he finally settled in Wiltshire but working in London. Two sons, David and Andrew, survive him. The funeral service will take place next Thursday at Grimethorpe. Further details from Newsome’s of Shafton on 01226 710528[

 

Summer Club   

There will be a ladies summer club at the Methodist Church Hall on Tuesday at 7pm.

 

Quiz Night

Every Thursday in the three Horse Shoes starting at 9pm.

 

Brierley Village club.

Artistes Friday and Sunday. Bingo with cash prizes Tuesday and Thursday.

 

Hillside Tara

Coffee morning every Tuesday with bingo and raffle. 10.30am.

 

Boys Brigade

The boys Brigade Juniors will meet on Wednesday while the senior boys will meet on Thursday at 6.45pm.

 

Girls Brigade

Meet in the Methodist Church Hall on Monday at 7.15pm.

 

Spiritualist

Sunday will be a service of hymns, prayers and clairvoyance and will be taken by Trish Darmanyn from Barnsley. Next Sunday Jackie Jennings from South Kirby will take the service. To ease traffic congestion on Church Street visitors are asked to use the Brierley Hall car park.
