Quiz

The winner of the Sunday night quiz in the Three Horse Shoes was Ray Evans who claimed a £10 prize

 

Methodist

Mrs C Sweetman will take the Sunday morning service at 10.15am while Mrs Hambleton will be organist. The Rev G Newton will take the evening service at 6pm. Mr E Broome will provide this weeks flowers. The Girls Brigade will meet on Monday at 7.15pm under the leadership of Janet Baxendale

 

Women's Fellowship

The speaker at the meeting of the Women's Fellowship today (Wednesday) will be Mr D Haynes. Margaret Watson will be pianist

 

Grange House

Vira Foster won the raffle prize at the Grange House social evening on Monday. John Vamplew won on Thursday while Sue Noble claimed Friday's prize

 

Social Club

The winner of the Friday night quiz was Chris Sykes while Mick Gough won the conundrum. Johnny Leyland won a gallon of beer and Paul Creasey the mixed grill. The Sunday afternoon quiz was won by Kevin Elvidge while Sue Moment won a gallon of beer. The Sunday night tote winner for £80 was Neil Myers with numbers 6 and 11 while Kenny Clarke won the mixed grill. Pete Clarke won a gallon of beer

 

Barn Dance

The members of the Brierley Methodist Church are to hold a Barn Dance and Barbecue at Burntwood Hall farm on Friday 20 July from 7pm till 10.30pm. Admission will be £5 and £3 for under 12s. There will be ample car parking and everyone will be made welcome. For tickets telephone Elizabeth Hambleton on 01226 713654

 

Weight Watchers

At the weekly meeting of the weight watchers that is held in the Methodist church on Mondays the members lost a total of 28.5 pounds

 

Neighbourhood Watch

There will be a meeting of the Hillside Neighbourhood Watch on Tuesday at 7pm in the Tara offices

 

Voting

Voting will take place on Thursday 26 July in Brierley and Grimethorpe on the issue of the abolition of the Town Council

 

Pop in club

The pop in club will be open at the Methodist Church on Thursday 26 July from 9.15am till 11.15am. Visitors will be welcome to call for tea/coffee/biscuits and a chat

 

Task Group

Volunteer members from the Primary school Task Group met on Tuesday. Items discussed were Safety and drug education

 

Congratulations

Well-deserved congratulations go out this week to Arthur Holling age 84 and his wife Phyllis age 76 from Brierley who recently celebrated 53 years of marriage. Arthur is at present being cared for by the staff in Belle Green Court nursing home Cudworth. Phyllis still lives in their home at Brierley. They met at the Coop at Cundy Cross in 1947 where they were both store assistants. They married at Lundwood Methodist Chapel in 1948 and lived in Burton Grange at Lundwood before moving to Brierley where Arthur became the Manager of the Brierley Coop on Church Street in 1959. Phyllis stayed at home to bring up their only child Delia. In later years Arthur worked at Greens in Wakefield who made ships boilers and the couple moved to Ryhill. When Delia was 9 Phyllis returned to work and stayed at Lyons bakery for 16 years before the couple decided to enjoy their retirement in Brierley and moved back there in 1992

 

Holiday Club

A Holiday club for children aged 5 to 11 years old will take place at the Methodist Church from Monday 13 August to Friday 17 August starting at 10am till 11.50am. Everybody welcome

 

St Paul's

A total of £570 was raised at the Strawberry Tea that was held on Sunday. The name of the doll was Isobel and was won by Sarah Fletcher. The Treasurer hunt was a real brainteaser and was won eventually by Mrs Conrad. Mrs D Halliday won a box of chocolates on the free ticket draw, could these two people please telephone Hilary Cook on 01226 713824 to claim their prizes. The exhibition of old photographs by Brierley Historic Photographic Society proved to be very popular and the society also donated a copy of the book Brierley Remembered No.1 to the tombola stall. South Hiendley Brass Band provided the entertainment throughout the afternoon. Winning raffle numbers were; 29. 75. 38. 202. 140. 145 and 242. Father John Baskerville will conduct the Eucharist service this Sunday morning at 9am. Jean Johnson will read the lesson

 

Spiritualists

There will be healing in the sanctuary on Friday at 6pm till 6.45 followed by an open circle at 7pm. On Sunday the guest speaker will be Sam Nichols who will take the service at 6pm

 

Playmates

At a recent summer fayre held in their welfare park school garden, the mothers and toddlers from the Brierley Playmates raised £151. Sweets in the jar was won by Christopher Jones and the name of the bear was Bungle and was guessed correctly by Carrie

 

Hillside Tara

Officials from the Hillside Tara will meet on Tuesday morning at 9.15am. Items on the agenda will include organising the Doncaster Dome trip and the mystery trip for the mature residents
