Impressions under new management

Impressions Hairdressing salon situated on Church Street between the general store and the fish shop opened up on Tuesday under new management. Michelle Foster (nee Sault) from Regina Crescent has lived in Brierley all her life and is a lecturer in Ladies and Gents hairdressing at Barnsley College, but hopes to spend her spare time in the shop working alongside her staff who are qualified to the highest level. Michelle sends a warm welcome to all customers old and new, and her opening times will be as follows.

 

Monday. Closed.

 

Tuesday. 9 am - 5 pm.

 

Wednesday. 9 am - 5 pm.

 

Thursday. 9 am - 8 pm.

 

Friday. 9 am - 6 pm.

 

Saturday 9 am- 4pm.

 

On 'Yer bike Richard

Brierley's local historian and keen cyclist Richard Watson came first in the Askern CC Hill Climb on Monday. His time was 1 min 21 sec, 6 seconds ahead of his nearest rival Steve Bamber from Shafton. The climb was held 600 yards up the north hill out of Wentbridge on the old A1. Richard is also the South Elmsall S C C Hill climbing champion and will be defending his title on 5 November. Four years ago he was placed 88th out of 120 in the National Championship Hill Climb.

 

Pool

The Three Horse Shoes pool team drew 3-3 at home to top of the league Cobbys on Monday night. Dereck Green, Jamie Beatey and Chris Upton winning for the home team.

 

Hillside Tara

Joan Gains, head of the Tenants and Resident Associations, called an emergency meeting of Hillside residents last night (Tuesday). The meeting was to discuss the decision of the Tara committee who offered their resignations at the last meeting and which would have meant the end of the organisation. After a lengthy discussion, the three ex officials Pat Goddard, Betty Ogley and Hazel Devonport decided to revoke their resignations until after the next General Meeting which will be held in December.

 

Brierley Village

The acting officers and other members of the working party, attended a meeting at Brierley Hall last night (Tuesday), to discuss the legal structure of the organisation for Brierley Village. A further meeting has been agreed for next week, to draft together a constitution.

 Information bus visits Hillside

The information bus toured Hillside on Wednesday last, offering the tenants of Hillside the chance to talk and ask questions about the proposed transfer from Barnsley Council to Springvale Housing. On hand with all the latest information was Gill Staniforth Housing management officer for the council, and Mary Clarke from the Chantry Housing office along with Chris Brown from PEP. PEP are an independent advice agency selected by a panel of Grimethorpe and Hillside residents. They provide independent, impartial and free advice to all tenants. They are also accountable to tenants at the Community Consultation Group. A number of residents visited the bus including, Sylvia Nixon, Mary Niven, Betty Ogley, Tom and Muriel Clarke, Susan Mangham, Joan Parkin and Elsie Raikes. PEP will be holding advice surgeries at the following venues; Wednesday 4 October. Milefield Court 1-00 - 3-00. Chantry Housing office. 3-15 - 5-00. Hillside Tara office 6-00 - 8-00. Tuesday 10 October. Milefield Court. 3-15 - 5-00. Red City Tara. 6-00 - 8-00. The Community Consultative group will hold a meeting at Milefield Court on 10 October at 1 pm. RJB Mining dig deep

RJB Mining dug deep when they donated £200 to the Mayor of Brierley Town Council, Councillor Chris Skye's Harvest Festival auction, making the final figure £1,315. A cheque will be presented to the special care baby unit at Barnsley General hospital on October 31.

 

Farriers Arms

I received an E-mail this week from Trevor Limbert of Mapplewell who wrote about the Watson family who were the victuallers of the Farriers Arms on Cordeux's Corner in the 1800s. Trevor is a direct descendant of the family and has been researching his family tree. His research so far has taken him back to 1788. I feel sure I will be hearing more from Trevor as his research continues, I will keep you informed.

 

St Pauls Church Harvest draw

Raffle tickets are now on sale for the St Paul's Church Harvest draw which will be made on October 15. First prize is £50, second prize £25 and there are at least 28 more prizes, tickets which can be obtained from any church member are 20p each.

 

Brierley Hall History

The completed manuscript 'The History of Brierley Hall' will be handed into the Town Hall on Monday October 6. The work has been researched and written by Baipip and Richard Watson.
